Pro tip - Setting your kick & bass right

A quick pro tip for producers of all levels.

This tip is more focus on electronic or hip hop styles of music.

Getting your bass and kick to sit right in the mix is really important. As a producer you can use a variety of technique to achieve this.

Remember there is no 100% correct way because each track is a little different. But this is a great way to get you heading in the right direction.

Techniques to get the Kick and Bass right:

  • Step 1 - Choose the right samples and sounds. This goes a long way to achieving a pro level result.
  • Step 2: Balance you mix. Most producers start from the bottom. So setting your kick around -10 on your mixbus is a great general guideline to get everything setting in the right spot.
  • Step 3: Sidechain the bass to the kick - this will create a quick duck allowing you to hear each part clearly. Depending on your style you can do this aggressively or be more subtle - Kick2, Duck-buddy or even you stock compressor does this great.
  • Step 4: You may need to use an eq with a tight q to Notch out the kick’s fundamental frequency from the bass.
  • Step 5: Depending on the song you might need to use saturation to expose the upper harmonics of the sub-bass further
  • Step 6 (optional): Use parallel compression on the bass group (here and on each group) for
    extra lift and depth

How it will help:

Perfecting the balance between the bass and kick is crucial for a solid mix.

These techniques ensure that both elements work together giving your tracks solid low end and pro level result.
